Why 130 to 160 characters?
Google renders roughly 155–160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile, and a description under 130 leaves space it would otherwise fill with your own words. It is the same advisory range our article checker scores a draft against.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly. It affects whether someone clicks the result you already earned, which is a different and often larger lever.
Why is the count sometimes outside the range?
Because we show you the real count rather than padding a description to hit a number. A short one that says something true beats a padded one that does not.
Will Google use exactly what I write?
Often, but not always — it rewrites descriptions when it thinks another passage answers the query better. Writing a good one is still how you get a say.
