Free check · asks Claude live while ChatGPT is paused, with a second opinion from Perplexity

Is my business on ChatGPT?

Type your business and what you sell. We ask ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Perplexity when ChatGPT is unavailable) 3 questions a stranger would and show whether it names you, and who it names instead.

Say it the way a stranger would search: "tax accountant for freelancers" or "emergency plumber in Tampa".

Asks ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Perplexity if ChatGPT is unavailable), then Perplexity for a second opinion. Free, no account, about a minute. Add your website and a link to it counts too.

The questions the check will ask

  1. I am looking for the best bookkeeping for small businesses in Denver. Who should I go with?
  2. Where can I find the best bookkeeping for small businesses in Denver? Name a few and say why.
  3. If I want the best bookkeeping for small businesses in Denver, who are the top-rated options, and why?

ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Perplexity if ChatGPT is unavailable), then Perplexity for a second opinion searches the web for each answer. An answer to the same question is shared for 7 days.

How it works

Three steps, about a minute

  1. Step 1: Type your business and what you sell, the way a customer would search.

  2. Step 2: We ask ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Perplexity when ChatGPT is unavailable) 3 buyer questions with web search on.

  3. Step 3: See whether you were named, who was named instead, and the sites it read.

Question
I am looking for the best family dentist in Austin. Who should I go with?
Answered by
Claude claude-haiku-4-5, with web search available
Asked

Businesses it named (4)

  1. Smile Creations: Great staff, great environment and great dentist!
  2. ATX Family Dental: well regarded for its focus on family care and modern approach to dentistry
  3. Forest Family Dentistry: features great dentists, x-ray technicians, and front desk staff
  4. Walden Dental: named one of the best dentists in Austin for four consecutive years by Austin Fit magazine
Sites it read: yelp.com, celebratedental.com, toprateddentist.com. If your business had been in that list, the check would show you as named for this question.

How to check by hand, and why one try is not enough

You can open ChatGPT and ask it yourself. Do it the way a customer would, and do it more than once, because the list it gives changes.

  • Who is a good accountant for a small online shop in Ohio?
  • Which marketing agency should a ten-person software company hire?
  • I need a reliable electrician in Raleigh for a panel upgrade. Who should I call?
  • What is the best way to find a fractional CFO, and who offers it?
  • Can you name three firms that do bookkeeping for restaurants?
  • Which law firm handles trademark filings for startups in Austin?
  • Who sells good organic dog food online and ships fast?
  • What are the best alternatives to hiring a full-time bookkeeper?

The check asks 3. On Growth, Rankli asks 50 of yours every week on Claude and Gemini.

Why ChatGPT may not know you exist

Not being named is rarely a penalty. It usually means ChatGPT found nothing clear to say about you for that question.

  • No page answers the question

ChatGPT searches the web for many questions and names the businesses on the pages that come back. If none of your pages states what you do, for whom and where in plain words, there is nothing to quote.

  • Your name is easy to confuse

Businesses that share a name with another company, a product or a common phrase get mixed up or skipped. Naming your site, city and category together in your page text and listings keeps you distinct.

  • Few other sites mention you

An assistant trusts a business that directories, reviews, press and comparison pages all describe the same way. One mention on your own site is a claim; several independent ones are a pattern.

  • The question names a place or a group

You may be named for "bookkeeper" and missed for "bookkeeper for restaurants in Denver". Each narrower question is its own contest, and a check shows which ones you win.

What AEO is and how AI picks who to name

What this check shows, and what it cannot

  • It asks ChatGPT three questions through OpenAI's API with web search on, or asks Claude, Gemini or Perplexity through their own APIs when ChatGPT is unavailable. The ChatGPT app can use a person's location and past chats, so one customer may see a different list.
  • A single run is a snapshot. The same question can name different businesses next week, which is why Rankli asks again on a schedule and counts how often you appear.
  • It looks for your business name and website in the answer. Use the name customers know you by.
  • For now it asks Claude, with Perplexity as a second opinion, and says which assistant gave each answer (ChatGPT resumes once our OpenAI access is restored). ChatGPT and Gemini can name other businesses for the same question.

OpenAI’s own documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, and that a site which blocks it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI Crawlers

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my business is on ChatGPT?

Ask it the questions your customers ask, in their words, and read whether your name appears. This page does that for you with three questions and shows who was named instead. Rankli repeats the check every week so you can see a trend.

Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?

Usually because the pages it read do not clearly describe you as a fit for that question. Publish a page that answers it plainly and make sure other sites describe you the same way. Rankli finds the questions you lose and writes a page for each.

Do I need to pay to be listed on ChatGPT?

There is no listing to buy. ChatGPT names businesses its sources describe well. The free trial of Rankli shows which questions you lose and drafts the pages that answer them.

Is the answer the same for everyone?

No. Answers vary by wording, by day and by what the person has asked before. That is why one check is a snapshot, and why Rankli asks the same questions every week and reports how often you are named.

Is this check free?

Yes, with no account and no email. When you want more than three questions, the 7-day free trial of Rankli asks Claude and Gemini up to 50 of your questions.

Is this the same as ChatGPT Business?

No. ChatGPT Business is OpenAI’s paid workspace plan for teams, a way for your staff to use ChatGPT. This page checks something else: whether ChatGPT and other assistants name your business when a stranger asks them for one like yours. Rankli is not part of OpenAI and sells no ChatGPT plan.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers to different people?

The ChatGPT app can use a person’s location and past chats, the model behind it changes, and the web it searches changes from one day to the next. This check asks through an assistant’s API, not the consumer app: OpenAI’s for ChatGPT, or, while ChatGPT is paused until our OpenAI access is restored, Anthropic’s for Claude. So it sees no one person’s location or history. One run is a snapshot, which is why Rankli asks the same questions every week and counts how often you are named.

Find every question you’re losing

Rankli asks Claude and Gemini the questions your customers ask, every week. It writes a page for each one you lose, publishes it to your site and asks again to show what moved.
