Why ChatGPT is not recommending your business: the checklist

When ChatGPT is not recommending your business, this checklist finds why: can AI get in, read your pages, tell what you sell and recommend you, with fixes.

ChatGPT is not recommending your business when it cannot reach your site, cannot read your pages, cannot tell what you sell, or finds other sources that fit the question better. This checklist tests each cause in the order an assistant meets your site, with the fix for each.

Work through it from the top. An early failure hides every later one: if AI cannot get in, nothing on the page can help.

First, confirm what you are losing

Before you fix anything, find out which questions you are losing. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, in fresh chats, several times each, and record who it names. Does ChatGPT recommend your business? gives you ten questions to start with.

The pattern tells you where to look:

  • Missing from every question. Suspect the first two groups below. AI may not be able to reach or read your site at all.
  • Named for some questions but not others. Suspect a missing page, or missing facts, for the questions you lose.
  • Named with the wrong details. Suspect facts that disagree between your site and other sources.

Why ChatGPT is not recommending your business: the checklist

The four groups below follow Rankli's free AI check, which runs all of them on your site in one pass. It scores your site out of 100 and needs no account. You can also check each item by hand. To see which questions you are losing, and to whom, the free ChatGPT visibility checker asks ChatGPT three of them and lists the businesses it names instead.

Can AI get in?

These are the doors an assistant has to pass before it reads a word.

  • AI can open your homepage. Bot protection, a consent wall or a slow chain of redirects can turn an assistant away. Fix: let declared AI visitors through your bot protection, and make the homepage answer quickly without a browser.
  • Settings that let AI visit your site. Your robots.txt file can block the visitors that fetch pages while a customer waits for an answer. Rankli's check looks for six of them by name: OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. Fix: allow each one.
  • Settings that let AI learn about you. A second set of names in the same file decides whether your pages are used for training: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and CCBot. Blocking them is your call. It means the next models learn about you only from other people's pages. Fix: allow them if you want future models to know you first-hand.
  • A quick summary of your business for AI to read. A short file at /llms.txt that says what you sell, who it is for and which pages matter. Fix: publish one with a one-line summary and links to your key pages. It is the simplest place to describe your business in your own words.
  • A map of your pages for AI. A sitemap lists your pages so any visitor can find them. Fix: serve /sitemap.xml and name it in your robots.txt file.

The vendors describe what blocking does in their own words. OpenAI's page on its crawlers, read on September 29, 2026, says a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is not shown in ChatGPT search answers. It also says GPTBot collects content that may be used for training. Anthropic's page on its crawlers, updated April 7, 2026, says blocking Claude-User may reduce your site's visibility when people ask Claude to search the web.

Can AI read the page?

Getting in is not enough. The words have to arrive in the page itself.

  • Words AI can see on your pages. Many sites build their text with scripts after the page loads. An assistant that reads the page as your server sends it can receive an empty shell. Fix: render your copy on the server, so the words are in the first response.
  • A title and description that say what you are. They are the lines an assistant reads first to learn what a page is. Fix: a short title that names what you sell, and a description that names the buyer too.
  • One clear main headline. Fix: give each page exactly one main headline that states what it offers.
  • Your main address and language are stated. Fix: set the page language and the canonical address on every page. Then an assistant knows which link to give and which market you serve.

Does AI know what you sell?

Facts written as data are easier to read than facts buried in prose.

  • Labels that tell AI who you are. Structured data (JSON-LD) with your name, address, logo and profiles helps an assistant match your site to your business. Fix: add an Organization block with your name, address, logo and links to your profiles.
  • Labels that tell AI your prices and products. Fix: describe what you sell as a Product, Service or SoftwareApplication, with an offer that carries a price and a currency.
  • Answers written as answers. Fix: add a short set of questions buyers ask before they buy, each with a direct answer, and mark it up as an FAQ.

Can AI recommend you, and send buyers to you?

The last group covers what a buyer asks right before choosing, and the step after it.

  • Prices an assistant can quote. When a customer asks what it costs, an assistant that finds no price can only say so, or quote a rival that published one. Fix: put your starting price in the page text and in your labels.
  • Comparisons AI can quote. Customers ask assistants to compare you with others. Fix: publish pages that compare you with named alternatives, with dated facts, and link them from your homepage.
  • A path to buy. Fix: link your sign-up, booking or checkout page with a plain link, not a button that only works with scripts.
  • A way to reach a person. Fix: link a contact page or an email address from your homepage.
  • A link preview. When your link is shared in a chat or a message, a title and image make it worth clicking. Fix: set a preview title, description and image for each page.

The reasons a site check cannot see

Your site can pass every check and still lose questions. These causes live outside the page:

  • No page answers the question. ChatGPT can only quote a page that exists. If your site never answers "who fixes water heaters in north Austin", a rival's page will. Fix: publish one page per question you are losing, with the answer first. How to get recommended by ChatGPT covers how.
  • Other sources name your rivals. Directories, review sites, comparison pages and forums describe businesses too. Fix: make sure the sources that describe your rivals describe you as well, with correct facts.
  • Your facts disagree. An old price on a directory, a service you stopped offering, an area you no longer cover. Fix: correct your site first, then every listing that repeats it.
  • You are not described for that need or place. If no page says you serve small clinics, or north Austin, ChatGPT has nothing to match you to. Fix: say plainly which customers, needs and places you serve.

What to fix first

Order matters, because some failures hide others.

  1. Anything in "Can AI get in?". A blocked door hides everything behind it.
  2. Words AI can see on your pages.
  3. Wrong facts, on your site and on your listings.
  4. A page for each question you are losing, starting with the ones closest to a purchase.
  5. Labels for who you are and what you sell.
  6. Everything else on the checklist.

Then ask your questions again after each change goes live, in the same words, and compare who gets named.

How Rankli helps

Rankli turns this checklist into a routine. The free AI check scores your site and lists the fixes in order. Inside Rankli, the Fix list keeps those fixes in one place. On WordPress or a Next.js blog, Rankli can write two of them for you with a one-click Apply: your summary for AI and the labels that tell AI who you are. On Scale and Agency, it re-applies them after every article.

Then the loop runs. Every week Rankli asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini your customers' questions, with Perplexity added on Scale and Agency. It shows the questions you are losing and who wins them. It writes and publishes an article for each one, and asks again 7 and 14 days after it goes live. Plans and prices are on the pricing page.

Questions

Why is ChatGPT not recommending my business?

It may not be able to read your site or tell what you sell, or it may find other pages that answer the question better. Rankli's free AI check tests the first two in one pass, and Rankli's weekly questions show where rivals win the third.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT recommending me?

OpenAI's crawler page says GPTBot collects content that may be used for training, while OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Rankli's free AI check reports each of these settings separately, so you can see what your site allows.

Can ChatGPT read my site if it is built with JavaScript?

It can miss words that only appear after scripts run, because AI visitors often read the page as your server sends it. Rankli's free AI check counts the words in that first response, so you see what an assistant receives.

How long after I fix my site will ChatGPT recommend me?

There is no set time, because ChatGPT decides for itself when an answer changes. Rankli asks your questions every week and shows whether the answers moved.

Is this checklist the same for Claude and Gemini?

Mostly, yes. The same doors, words and labels matter to every assistant. Rankli's free AI check looks for Claude's and Perplexity's visitors as well as ChatGPT's.

How this post was made

The Rankli team wrote this post, and the product scored it. It went through the same 15 rules a customer’s draft goes through: the word-count range, the heading structure, the keyword placement, the fabricated-statistic detector and the rest. Every number below came back from that run on the words above it.

The rules are the ones in src/content/seo.ts, unchanged for us: hard rules block a draft from ever reaching a customer’s site, advisory rules only lower the score.
