Yes, when it is checked and specific. No, when it is published in volume with nobody reading it. That is the whole answer, and the reason people keep asking whether is AI written content good for SEO is that both halves are true at once, which makes for bad headlines. The production method is not what search engines penalise. What gets a site into trouble is the thing that mass production makes easy: pages with nothing in them that a person could not have found somewhere else.

Is AI written content good for SEO according to Google's guidance?

Google's published guidance on this has been consistent and is worth reading in the original on Search Central rather than through a blog post. Two points carry all the weight.

The first: content is assessed on whether it is helpful, reliable and made for people, not on how it was produced. Automation is not itself a violation. Search has never had a reliable way to detect authorship method, and building a ranking system on a signal you cannot measure would be a strange choice.

The second: using automation to generate content primarily to manipulate rankings is a spam-policy violation, and their spam policies name scaled content abuse specifically. The distinguishing feature is not the tool. It is producing many pages that exist to catch queries rather than to answer them.

Put those together and the practical rule is simple. If a piece would be worth publishing had a person written it, the model that wrote it is nobody's business. If it would not, the model does not save it.

The four failure modes that actually get pages demoted

In our experience of building a scorer for this exact problem, the defects that show up in generated drafts are the same four, over and over.

The unsourced claim. A sentence with the grammar of a citation and no source behind it. A model produces a plausible statistic exactly as easily as a true one, because plausibility is what it optimises. This is the failure with consequences outside SEO: a customer quotes it back at you, or a regulator does.

Thinness dressed as structure. Eight headings, 2,000 words, and no sentence a reader could not have guessed. This is what scaled content abuse looks like in practice, and it is the failure mode that mass production is uniquely good at.

Sameness. Thirty articles that each cover the obvious subtopics in the obvious order, because that is the centre of the distribution the model was trained on. Nothing in it is wrong. Nothing in it is yours.

Absence of the business. A piece that ranks for a phrase and never mentions what you sell. It reads as filler to a person and it converts nobody.

None of those requires a person to write every word. All of them require someone or something to read the output before it publishes.

What we check before anything publishes

Rankli runs fifteen rules on every draft and eleven of them block it. Three are aimed squarely at the failures above.

The fabricated-specifics rule fails any sentence shaped like a sourced claim: a percentage sitting next to attribution language, an academic-style citation with a year, a reference to a dated study, a quotation attributed to a person. It cannot verify a claim. It can refuse the shape of a claim that would need verifying, and a person then decides.

The section-substance rule fails any H2 with fewer than 25 words of prose under it, which catches the heading that was planned and abandoned.

The subject-coverage rule strips every occurrence of the target keyword out of the article and then asks whether it still mentions what your business sells. An article that only ever says the phrase it was told to rank for fails.

A hard failure regenerates the draft once with the failure fed back in. If it fails again it is held with the reason written on it, and a project setting keeps failing drafts in the app permanently rather than publishing them. The two kinds of evidence worth having

Two kinds of evidence exist here, and they deserve different weight. One is about how the work is made. The other is about whether it moved anything, which is a much harder question and the one most reporting in this category quietly avoids.

The first is this blog. Every post carries the scorer's full report at the bottom: the score, the word count, the reading grade and each of the fifteen rules with its verdict. Some posts are written by our pipeline and some by our team, and each one says which. That is a claim about process, and you can check it by reading rather than believing it.

The second is measurement, and it is where the interesting problem lives. Publishing and then reading a chart tells you almost nothing, because the platforms move on their own. That is not a rhetorical point: our calibration harness builds 150 independent worlds and runs the same follow-up window twice, once with an intervention and once without, from identical seeds, so the true effect is known exactly. Against a true effect of 2.3 points, the difference-in-differences estimator's interval covered the truth 92.7% of the time with a bias of −0.03 points. The naive before-and-after estimator, which is what most reporting in this category uses, overstated the same effect by 31%. In windows where nothing at all was done, it still moved at least 1.3 points half the time.

So when someone tells you AI content did or did not work for them, ask what they compared it against. Usually the answer is last month, and last month is not a control group. The method and the figures are on our proof page.

What to do with the archive you already have

Most people asking this question are not starting from nothing. They have forty posts, some written by a person, some produced by a tool last year in a burst nobody has read since.

Sort them into three piles. The pages that get traffic and conversions are the ones to improve, not replace: add the first-hand specifics, update the prices, fix the internal links pointing into them. The pages that get nothing and say nothing are candidates for deletion or consolidation, and consolidating three thin pieces into one good one is usually the higher-return move. The pages in between get left alone until you have finished the first two piles.

Do not mass-rewrite an archive with a model. It is the single fastest way to turn a site that was merely unremarkable into one that looks machine-made, and you will lose the pages that were working. Give it something only you know

Your prices, your limits, your failure cases, what you refuse to do. A model cannot invent your first-hand specifics, and those are the sentences that make a page worth citing.

Check every draft mechanically, then read the exceptions

The point of fifteen automated rules is not that they replace judgement. It is that they let your judgement go where it is needed instead of being spent on word counts.

Keep a person accountable for what publishes

Someone should be able to say why each page exists. If nobody can, the page is the kind Google's spam policies describe.

Publish for a cluster, not a phrase

Coverage and internal linking are what compound. Thirty pieces that answer a whole buying decision beat thirty unrelated pieces with better sentences.

Wait six weeks, then judge it against a control

Change one thing at a time, write down what you expect before you look, and hold a set of pages or questions out of the work so you have something to compare against when the platform moves on its own.

The short answer, expanded

The pages that win still answer a real question, state specifics somebody can check, and belong to a site that covers its subject properly.
