## How the check works

You give your business name and what you sell, and the place if buyers name one, and your website if you want a link to it to count. The check asks ChatGPT
3 questions with web search on, the way a customer's question reaches it:

1. Give me a ranked list of the top payroll software for restaurants options.
2. Rank the five best payroll software for restaurants choices and explain the order.
3. Which payroll software for restaurants would you put first, second and third, and why?

(Shown with the page's example values; the check fills in yours.) For each answer it shows
whether ChatGPT named your business, who it named instead, and which sites it read. An answer to
the same question is shared for 7 days, and the report says when it was given.

## Shortlist questions where the order of names matters

A buyer who asks for a ranked list usually contacts the first two or three names and stops. These are the shapes of question where being third or fifth is a different result from being first.

## What "rank" means in an AI answer

There is no page two in a chat. An assistant either names you in the handful of businesses it lists or leaves you out, and the order it lists them in is the closest thing to a ranking position.

### Named, or left out

The first result is whether your business appears in the answer at all. A business the answer never mentions has no position, however well its own site ranks in a search engine.

### Your place in the list

When the answer recommends you inside a numbered or bulleted shortlist, the check reports your place in it, such as #2. Mentioned in passing outside the list is reported as named, with no position.

### Who sits above you

Every business the answer named instead of you is listed, with how many of the answers named it, so you can see which competitors the assistant reaches for first in your market.

### Why positions move

An assistant writes a fresh list each time it is asked. Search results it reads change, the model is updated and the wording of a question shifts the order. One run is a reading, not a fixed position.

## What one ranking check can and cannot tell you

- This check asks through an assistant’s API, not the consumer app: OpenAI’s for ChatGPT, or, while ChatGPT is paused until our OpenAI access is restored, Anthropic’s for Claude. So it sees no one person’s location or history.
- For now it asks Claude, with Perplexity as a second opinion, and says which assistant gave each answer (ChatGPT resumes once our OpenAI access is restored). ChatGPT and Gemini can name other businesses for the same question.

- A position is only reported when the answer recommends you inside a list. Your business name has to match the one in the answer, so use the name customers know.

### Does this rank checker ask ChatGPT itself?

Not right now. ChatGPT is paused until our OpenAI access is restored, so for now each question goes to Claude through Anthropic’s API with web search on, and to Perplexity for a second opinion. The report names the assistant behind each answer. Rankli’s paid plans ask the same questions every week on each assistant they cover.

### Is there a ranking in ChatGPT like Google’s positions?

Not a fixed one. An assistant writes a new list for every question, so "rank" means whether you are named and where you sit in the list that answer gave. Measured over many weeks it becomes a share of answers, which is what Rankli tracks.

### Why do I rank first for one question and not at all for another?

Each question is its own shortlist. A narrower question, with a place or a type of customer in it, draws on different pages from a broad one. Rankli finds the questions you are missing from and writes a page for each.

### How do I move up the list?

Give the assistant more to quote: a page that answers the buyer’s exact question, prices and places in plain text, and other sites that describe you the same way. Rankli writes those pages and asks again 7 and 14 days after each one goes live.
